PARENT TESTIMONIAL: Nancy DeNicola September 2015
Who is Steve Bort; he is a person who has changed our life. My son, Nick DeNicola, received a call from Steve Bort in Oct of 2014. Steve said he was a recruiter from NY and he wanted my son to come to a showcase and he emailed some information. Of course I was skeptical. I called Steve myself and asked many questions and felt comfortable with Nick going to the showcase. Nick went and even brought a couple of friends and my husband and I also attended. The showcase was presented very professionally, there were many college scouts there and it was a great experience.
A few days later my son received a call from Steve and Steve told Nick that he was selected to play on his High School World Series Team which play games in Cleveland, Ohio in July of 2015. My son was happy but I just pushed it off as another money maker and never thought about it again. During 2014 and even into 2015 Steve continued to speak with my son and even with me. He talked about this Cleveland event and the fact that Nick would be playing with kids from around the country. Again, I listened but pushed it off. In May of 2015 my son and I called Steve together and asked about this world series event and he said it was the CABA World Series. Once I had that information I was able to research what it was all about. I even called the President of the CABA to make certain Steve Bort was who he said he was. It was then that we started to take things more serious. Steve invited my son to come to another showcase in June of 2015, this time he didn’t charge him. He said come out and show your stuff you don’t’ need to pay again. (I failed to mention that at the Oct. event although it was run very well, it was the windiest day of Oct, just crazy windy). My son went his showcase and again he brought several of his friends, it was just amazing. College scouts all around and several colleges spoke with my son. It was after that event (this time I introduced myself to Steve) that I realized he was the real thing and there was no way my son could miss playing at the event in Cleveland. I called Steve and said “so how much does it cost to attend this World Series event” he responded “nothing”. I don’t charge anyone to play baseball you just need to pay for your expenses there. I was amazed, this is the first time ANYONE didn’t ask me for money.
In July we drove to Cleveland an attended the event. It was 7 days with 2 games a day. The team consisted of boys from all over the country. It was so AMAZING. Steve put together a team with kids from all over, but it was like these boys played together forever. They got along and became fast friends. We stayed in a hotel that was less than perfect but it was over shadowed by the amazing team that my son was playing on. I spoke with several parents at the event who also said they were concerned that Steve wasn’t the real thing but they also checked on him and were so excited that they attended this event. Steve had 2 coaches helping him and they were amazing as well, it was just perfect. We did learn something about Steve. He is brutally honest, while we enjoy this and even embrace it, some may not like it. He was very clear with each child as to what they had to work on. My husband can see “bs” a mile away and he felt it was refreshing to speaking with a guy who knew so much and spoke honestly.
When the event ended is was sad because it was such a great experience but we had to go home and we couldn’t think anything could top it. Within 2 weeks of being home my son received a call from Steve who told him to be on the lookout for a call from a NY Mets Scout (really a Mets Scout). Nick received that call and he was invited to play at the Metropolitan Baseball Classic, which hosts the best high school baseball players in the country. I couldn’t believe this was happening. My son, Nick DeNicola from the little town of East Hanover, NJ. But it did happen, and my son participated in the Metropolitan Baseball Classic in Aug. all this because of Steve Bort, a guy from Brooklyn NY that believed my son had talent and wanted to make certain that the right people knew he had talent. He made calls to college coaches and to scouts, our phones were lit up constantly with calls. Again, what could be better than this? My son attends a prep school and was injured his Junior so he didn’t get to play. The Prep Baseball Reporter saw him play at the Metropolitan Baseball Classic and emailed him and said “how did I not see or hear about you before, you have so much raw talent and I can’t wait to see you play again”. He had a spotlight written about him from the Prep Baseball Reporter. Again, it was so exciting.
So, who is Steve Bort, he is someone who entered our lives and has made a difference. He is someone who truly knows baseball and if your son has the talent he will make certain that he gets noticed. He is someone who cares, someone who tells it like it is and someone who could make a difference in your son’s life. He is someone we are honored to have met.
