STARS REMAIN UNBEATEN, HOME OWNERS AND TROUT RIGHT BEHIND

Both Home Hardware and Cole-Munro kept pace with league leading Elite Stars Elgin after three games of the St. Thomas Men's Basketball League season.

The Home Owners (2-1) won their second straight 89-83 on the back of leading scorer Ryan Pflanzer's 40-point performance Wednesday.

His squad was trailing Mackie's by nine at the half, but in the first three minutes of the third quarter, he scored ten quick points to give them a lead and they never really looked back.

He would make seven triples en route to a league season high 40.

The game started with Mackie's on fire, and Jack Girden pouring in 13 points early and the OrangeAde's (1-2) lead by eight after one, and nine after two.

In the final quarter, a late push by Mackie's cut the 15-point defecit to just six, but too many turnovers cost them a chance at a comeback.

Sean Milroy added 18 for the winners with Josh Vigars scoring 21 and Girden 20 in a losing cause.

In the middle game, Elite Stars Elgin (3-0) stayed unbeaten as the wore down a short handed Ambrose Plumbing (1-2) squad 78-59.

Trailing 53-51 early in the fourth quarter, the Stars went on a 27-4 run to blow out the Plumbers. The Stars took advantage of tired legs to run fast breaks the entire fourth quarter as they poured in 29 points in the final 10 minutes.

Rob Wakefield finished with 26 points while Ian Thomson and Mike Morrison had 11 each.

Tai Montfort had 19 points and Malik Williams had 16 for the Plumbers who have dropped 2 in a row.

The final matchup was as physical a game as you'll see in the league all season. The officials did a good job balancing the line of letting Cole-Munro and Talbot Trail play, while trying to keep it controlled.

Talbot Trail Physiotherapy - missing their leading scorer  and with only five players- had a 28-24 lead at the half thanks to 16 from Andrew Lynch in a low scoring affair.

This is where things got interesting, especially if you like defensive basketball.

The Trout would outscore the Physiotherapists 7-4 in the third quarter, and then again 10-4 in the fourth en route to a 41-36 game. It's quite possibly the lowest scoring game in recent league history.

Scott Ross had 14 points for the Trout (2-1) in the win, while Lynch had 20 in defeat for the Physiotherapists (0-3) who are looking for their first win.

Ryan Pflanzer has been named Elgin Chrysler Player of the Week scoring 72 points in a pair of victories for the Home Owners.

ELITE STARS REMAIN UNDEFEATED

For the second straight game, Elite Stars Elgin nearly gave away a ten point lead late in the fourth quarter, but once again they hung on for the victory.

The Stars held a 65-55 advantage midway through the final quarter, but a 12-2 run by Talbot Trail Physiotherapy tied the game at 68 when Davis Streib hammered down a breakaway two-handed dunik.

Rob Wakefield would score on the ensuing possessoin and the Stars  (2-0) would shut out the Physiotherapists (0-2) the rest of the way, winning it 73-68.

A balanced scoring attack for the Stars saw five players reach double digits, led by Rob Wakefield with 17, while Brian Apfelbeck and Merrick Mount added 16 each.

The game looked well in hand for the Stars with an 11 point lead going into the fourth, but a few turnovers and multiple early fouls allowed TTP back into the game.

Jakob Dugas had 13 points and Mike Morrison 11 for the winners.
Davis Streib had 28 points and Andrew Lynch had 24 wtih the pair combining for 12 three point field goals in defeat for the Physiotherapists (0-2).

The second contest was actually no contest at all.

Cole-Munro Foods put their foot down from the opening tip, jumping out to a 24-7 lead before a little run by Mackie's cut the defecit to nine at the break.

It only got worse for the OrangeAde's from there as they had double-digit turnovers and missed everything as the Trout kept pulling away, opening up a 19-point lead after 3, and finiishing with a 70-46 victory.
Centre Scott Ross was a monster inside for the Trout (1-1) scoring 27 points, 18 of those in the second half including a pair of triples.

Andrew Cole had 13 for the winners, while Jack Girden scored 16 in a losing cause for Mackie's (1-1).

A scheduling mistake put Ambrose Plumbing and Home Hardware up against each other for the second straight night to start the season, but the back-to-back provided a great game.

The two battled back and forth with top scorers Malik Williams and Ryan Pflanzer going toe-to-toe for the second time.

Both were on fire in the first half, with Williams scoring 16, but Pflanzer having 19 and putting Home Hardware up by eight at the break.

The Plumbers came out strong in the third quarter, bringing the game even, with Williams adding 12 in the frame, but the Home Owners still held a 62-60 lead.

In the fourth, the Home Owners just outhustled, and outrebounded the Plumbers with Sean Milroy and Jordan MacDougall both pounding the glass at both the offensive and defensive ends.

Milroy also had a nine-point quarter at crucial times scoring a career high 20 points for Home Hardware  (1-1) who won it 86-73.

Planzer finished with a game high 32 whie MacDougall and Hogan Dao each added 11.

Williams topped 30 points for the second straight game to start his Men's League career with Steve Barton adding 20 for the Plumbers (1-1).

OPENING NIGHT OF THE 26 SEASON WAS A BANGER

Opening night of the St. Thomas Men's Basketball League season was a thriller wtih two of the three games coming down to the final second.

The season opener featured Cole-Munro Foods (missing their top two draft picks) against defending champion Elite Stars Elgin.

What looked like it could be a mismatch on paper, turned out to be anything but.

The Trout came out of the gate hot, and held an early lead and on the back of hot shooting by Harrison Cole (13 first half points) held a 38-33 lead at the break.

The third quarter was a different story as the Stars put up a 26-15 quarter to go up 59-53 heading into the fourth.

Things would get really interesting in the final minute.

Trailing 63-61 in the final minute, Cole hit a three-pointer to give the Trout the 64-63 lead. However after a careless turnover with 33 seconds left, gave the Stars another opportunity and they didn't waste it.

Brian Apfelbeck nailed a three-pointer to go up 66-64.

The Trout had one last desperation shot at the buzzer, and it bounced off the rim for a Stars 66-64 win.

Rob Wakefield had 18 points for the winners, wtih Apfelbeck and Jakob Dugas each scoring a dozen for the winners (1-0).

Kamal Aizimi had 25 points and Cole had 18 points for the Trout (0-1) in a losing cause.

In the middle contest, Mackie's lead throughout en route to a 77-66 victory over Talbot Trail Physiotherapy.

After a slow start shooting the ball, the OrangeAde's caught fire putting up 17 points in the final four minutes of the first quarter to lead 20-11 after one.  The Physiotherapists would chip away at that lead and cut the defecit to just six at the break.

It was all Mackie's after that taking a double-digit lead the rest of the way to win their opener. Jack Girden scored 24 points, with Oliver Taylor adding 19 and Brent Lale 11 for Mackie's (1-0).

Andrew Lynch had 23 points and rookie Davis Streib added 18 for Talbot Trail (0-1).

The finale featured a thrilling comeback in the final minute and nearly needed overtime to settle the score.

Trailing 72-62 with 1:30 to go Home Hardware got three pointers from Hogan Dao, Ryan Pflanzer and a three-point play from Sean Milroy to cut the defecit to just one against Ambrose Plumbing.

After a pair of missed free throws, the Home Owners had a chance to win it, but Malik Williams stole the ball at half court and took it for a breakway layup, however he left 2 seconds left on the clock.

Ryan Pflanzer would be fouled on the final shot of the game, giving himself three free throws to tie it.

However when the second bounced off the rim, the Plumbers took a 74-72 win.

Williams scored 31 points in his Men's League debut, with Tai Montfort adding 29 for the Plumbers (1-0).

Pflanzer had 22 points and Juan Carranza 17 for the Home Owners (1-0)  in a losing cause.
