Although rain cut short last weekend's Riverhawk Opener, the 14u Illinois Indians were named tournament champions after Saturday's 2-0 start. The tournament, held in Rockford, IL, saw all of Sunday's action canceled following a full schedule of action on Friday and Saturday.
The Indians saw the first action on Saturday morning, sqauring off at 8:00am against the McHenry County Outlaws at Road Ranger Stadium. The Tribe jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following a two-out triple by Jack Suwinski in the first and they never looked back. The 14u squad plated 7 more in the second inning and held the Outlaws scoreless to make it a 10-0 game in four innings. Suwinski finished the game 2-2 with 4 RBI. Newcomer Tyler Pauly also added a perfect day at the plate driving in 3 of his own and scoring twice. Charlie Nortons and Andrew Kaczmarek combined for a shutout on the mound. Norton pitched three strong innings, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 3.
In Saturday's second game the bats came alive early again against the Fox Valley Falcons. The Indians got off to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning after their first four hitters notched consecutive hits, all later coming around to score. They would plate 4 more in the second inning and 2 in the third to match their game one output. Zach Nussbaum, Tim Simon, and Norton would all finish with 2 hits to lead the Indians' offense, but the story of the game was the pitching performance of Jack Suwinski. In his first start of 2012, Jack pitched a 4 inning no hitter, walking only one and striking out 4.
This Indians hit the diamond again Thursday against the Park Ridge Warriors in the first game of MSBL league play.
