Today We Lost a Giant!

On Wednesday, February 4th we lost a true giant in RI Senior Softball.  Today Joe Giordano passed away at home surrounded by his family at age 96.

Joe saw an ad in the Providence Journal in 1981 asking that any men looking to play softball who were 50+ meet at The Driftwood Lounge in Pawtuxet.  The ad was place by league founded, Len Yanku who was hoping to restart his softball career.  Eight men showed up who had an interest in playing.  The following Sunday at Valley Street Playground in Providence, the number had grown to 19.  By the end of the season 60 players were playing senior softball.

One of those original eight founders was Joe Giordano who for the next 44 years would serve the league as a player, manager and for many, many years, as a Board Member.  Many of those years on the Board Joe would serve as Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner.

When the league formed its RI Senior Softball Hall of Fame, Joe was a member of the first group of inductees.

Joe never played softball prior to 1981.  He started working with his father as a barber at age 18, and between running his business and raising a family with his wife Gert, there was no time.  He retired from cutting hair in summer 2025, a career of 78 years.

Never a great softball player, he would still put on the uniform every Sunday and even in his later years would take an occassional turn at bat in blowout games.  He also took batting practice regularly with the team prior to game time.

The league owes a great debt of gratitude to Joe for helping establish the league and lead it to the league it is today with 19 teams and 351 players.

Rest in Peace, Joe. A lot of us are incredibly greatful for us having a place to play the game we love. Thank you!
