The Black Ice organization began in 1996 on Long Island, New York as a 10 and under team named the "Power Play Cyclones". This team was the first of many teams to be sponsored by the Power Play facility in East Setauket, Long Island. From there, the owners of the rink, Oscar and Barbara Valencia sponsored tournament teams between the ages 8 and 18, the teams were called "Power Play Black Ice". The name change was made from a merger between Mark Worhle, who had two tournament teams but no place to call home and the rink Power Play which was looking to start a tournament program. The Power Play facility was a small indoor rink where the teams practiced over the next four years. Some of the original coaches of the teams were Kevin O’Brien, Steve Demaio, Leo Sweeney, Phil LoBianco, and of course Aaron Weiss and Jason Muro. These teams participated in local tournaments at such facilities as Bulldog Arena, The Miller Place Dome, and Rapid Fire Arena. Their only travels were to Voorhees, New Jersey, to play the famous 99'ers at Todd Milton’s rink, "The Coliseum". It wasn’t until 1999 when the Black Ice organization decided to go to their first national tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Black Ice was represented by 3 different teams that year in Las Vegas, their 8 and under team, 12 and under team, and their 14 and under team. All teams were very successful, with the 8 and under team beating the Swarm(Both NARCH and AIRHS champ) out of Irvine, California to win Black Ice it’s first of many National Championships. Since then the teams travel each year to Winter Cup, Virginia, New Jersey, before heading to summer Nationals. Over the past years Black Ice has traveled across the U.S. to participate in AAU, AIRHS, NARCH, and TORHS National Tournaments.
