BOYS BASKETBALL
Narrows League
* At Bellarmine 52, South Kitsap 48 The Wolves dropped their league opener largely because they shot only 32 percent from the field and because they were outscored 19-7 in the second quarter.
"Their kids were in foul trouble so they pulled 'em,'' said SK assistant coach Xavier Miranda. "We were in foul trouble, too, and tried to save some of our kids.''
But the Lions went on a 17-1 second-quarter run. Jason Preuit led the Wolves with 16 points while Jason Frazier added 10.
South is 0-1 in league play and 1-2 on the season.
Pierce County League
* North Mason 63, at Washington 42 The Bulldogs broke open a close game in the third quarter to improve to 2-0 in Pierce County League play and 4-0 on the season.
Sean Reid, a 5-10 senior, led North Mason with 14 points and added six rebounds. Senior Billy Landram, 6-6, just missed a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
"We did a great job defensively in the third quarter,'' NM coach Brian Roper said. "We came out with a little more emotion and went back to our 1-2-2 matchup, which is our primary defense.''
The Bulldogs continue PCL play Tuesday with their first home game of the season against Franklin Pierce.
Non-League
* Bremerton 92, at Hoquiam 88 (2 OT) Jeff Gallagher scored a career-high 34 points, hitting 12-of-14 free throws, to lead the Knights to this wild victory.
Hoquaim forced the first overtime when Ryan Pieper, who scored 38, threw in a shot from halfcourt at the buzzer. That was the Grizzlies' fourth 3-pointer in the final two minutes.
It was tied 72 at the end of regulation. Josh Parrish hit a free throw to tie the score with :08 in the first overtime, which ended tied at 80.
In the second OT, Gallagher hit 3-of-4 free throws to clinch the win after Everett Williams, who scored 21, hit three earlier free throws to give the Knights the lead.
Damon Radford added 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Knights (2-2), who open league play next Friday at home against Port Angeles. It was Hoquiam's season opener.
* Central Kitsap 72, at Curtis 67 The Cougars went up by nine points after one quarter and used a third-quarter running game to rebuild to 10 points a lead that Curtis had cut into. Josh Ellis (21 points) and Scott Hamre (20) cooked Curtis's zone to pace the Cougars, 2-1 on the season.
Central also got good board play from 6-9 Hayden Reoy, 6-5 Matt Brien and 6-10 Luke Arthur.
* Port Townsend 53, at Chimacum 42 "We had a real tough time running our offense,'' said Chimacum coach Dave Porter, whose Cowboys managed only 22 points through three quarters against their Jefferson County rivals. "Port Townsend did a nice job defensively. I don't want to take anything away from them. But our offense the first part of the game was nonexistent.''
Ethan Rogers led PT, which is now class AA and a member of the Olympic League, with 13 points while Ben Burke added 10. Jake Johnson topped Chimacum, still in the class A Nisqually League, with 12 points. The Cowboys, 0-2, host Sequim Tuesday night.
* King's West 61, Calipatria 53 After back-to-back losses in the San Diego Small School Tournament at La Jolla, Calif., King's West went back to basics and produced its first victory of the season.
"They were very quick and we were taller,'' said KW coach Rick Walker. "We forced them to play against our zone and our guys did an excellent job rebounding and getting the fastbreak going.''
Down 32-27 at halftime, the Warriors used a couple of putback baskets by Joss Foss to spark a surge that carried them to a 12-point lead. Foss had 12 points and eight rebounds in a balanced KW attack. Tyler Kuske had 14 points and seven rebounds; Brian Thompson 12 points and five rebounds; Ben Wingo 10 points and seven rebounds; Joe Fluery seven points and six rebounds.
The Warriors close play in the 16-team tournament today against Mountain Empire before returning home Sunday.
* Rogers (Puyallup) 75, at North Kitsap 49 The Vikings played a pretty good first half and actually led at one point. But two three-pointers near the end of the half by Chad Johnson put Rogers up by eight at halftime and gave the Rams the momentum that carried them to an easy victory.
Pat Duncan, a 6-1 senior forward, tossed in 24 points for NK while getting a start in place of injured David Urban (sprained ankle).
North, 1-2, plays at Central Kitsap on Friday. |
