BREMERTON, Wash. – Some games you just have to let come to you.
Such was the case for the Warren Ave (WA) Boys AA Gold Knights Monday (Mar. 05) night at Mountain View Middle School. A third of the way through the first half they found themselves trailing the last-place Chico Boys AA Black 4-to-11.
But Warren Ave coach Jeromy Sump didn’t panic, he has been coaching this group of boys for many seasons.
“We are a slow starting team,” Sump explained, “and sometimes it hurts us a lot. Today, it worked out well.”
His patience paid off, as the Knights got moving and rolled to a 53-to-34 win, there fifth of the season.
Miles Gurske led the team with 24 points, his third twenty-point game of the season. He also flirted with a potential second triple-double, racking up 8 rebounds and 7 steals by the final buzzer.
Overall, it was an uninspiring win for the Knights. They scored twenty-three points in the 1st half and twenty-nine points in the 2nd half.
Chico’s scoring was also balanced through both periods - sixteen and eighteen points.
“We definitely need to work on our defense,” emphasized Sump , “and moving the ball around more (offensively).”
After Gurske, team-scoring and rebounding was evenly distributed between five Warren Ave players. Kayne Taylor logged 7 points (pts) and 2 rebounds (reb). Amondre Knight added 6 pts and 5 reb. Reserve center Tramon Bracy put together a season-high 5 pts and 5 reb. Starting forward Hunter Tipler, who sat the bench most of the 1st half with three fouls, contributed 4 pts and 4 reb. And, Danavien Colquitt followed with 3 pts and 4 reb, as well as the team’s only blocked shot.
“It was nice to come back after the tough loss we had last week,” Sump added.
Last Thursday (Mar. 01), the Knights traveled to Silverdale, Wash., and were handed a 52-to-39 loss by #2 Chico Boys AA Red. It was Warren Ave’s third loss of the season and put a damper on their climb back to the top of the standings.
With two regular season games remaining, the Knights (5-3) will see how ready they are for post-season play on Wednesday (Mar. 7) when they face-off against club rival WA Boys AA Blue (7-1) at Mountain View. Both teams, family members, Bremerton basketball fans, and the club have had this date marked on their calendar for months.
Tip-off for this bragging-rights game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
