PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – Every basketball game has its own personality, which the Mountain View (MV) Girls JV team experienced first-hand Tuesday (Feb. 13) at Marcus Whitman Middle School.
For the Lady Squires it was all about free throws in the first two quarters. Six different players got called to the charity strip. In one form or the other, they converted 4 of 11 shots (.364) but found themselves trailing the Lady Trailblazers 4-to-21 at halftime.
Although their shots from the floor began to fall in the 2nd half, specifically in the 4th quarter, it was not with enough frequency to make up the halftime deficit. In the end the Lady Squires departed Port Orchard, Wash., with a 46-to-16 loss, their third of the season.
Overall, the MV Girls JV played a balanced game throughout the entire 32 minutes. They shot 18 field goals in both halves, took less than 10% of theirs shot from three-point range, pulled down 63% of their offensive rebounds, and hauled in 19 steals, 7 in the 1st half and 12 in the 2nd half. They just couldn’t get the ball to fall from the field during in first 16 minutes of play.
Jaidah Conklin came off the bench to lead the team with 5 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Janaea Johnston followed with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Mainalei Penitusi added 3 points and 5 rebounds and starter Alexandra Alsteen contributed 3 points and 4 rebounds.
Up next for the Lady Squires JV (2-3) are the Klahowya Eagles (3-0) on Thursday (Feb. 15). Tipoff for the JV game at Klahowya Secondary School (Silverdale, Wash.) will occur around 5:00 p.m., following the Varsity game.
