It wasn't pretty but the Lady Squires JV

adapted and beat visiting Curtis

BREMERTON, Wash. – ‘Entertaining’ was the word Mountain View Girls JV coach Jessi Bolger used to describe Thursday’s (Mar. 01) victory over the visiting Curtis Cougars. And, that it was.

For all four quarters both teams ran up and down the hardwood, giving the ball away, stealing the rock from each other, taking occasional shots at the basket, and pulled down rebounds. The Lady Squires were clearly the better team and came away with their second consecutive win, 28-to-8, their fourth of the season.

“This game we didn’t get to run any of our plays,” Coach Bolger stated, ‘because it was so back and forth, fast paces, which we are not used to. But, we managed to pull it off.”

After opening the game with a 7-to-3 first quarter performance, it was Mountain View’s full-court press that allowed the Lady Squires to jump out to a 19-to-4 halftime lead.

Coach Bolger went on to explain that, “we have been practicing our press for weeks and the girls finally executed it. It helped get us the lead.”

In the second half the Lady Squires kept their poise and their composure in the hectic game pace. “I think that says more than any of their skills,” Bolger added.

Hidden beneath the winning score, the plethora of turnovers (54), and the season-high steals (42), is the individual performance of reserve guard Janaea Johnston. In just over 13 minutes of action, Johnston recorded the team’s first double-double of the season, with 10 points and 12 rebounds. In the first half alone, she had seven of the Mountain View’s 19 points (37%) and ten of their 33 rebounds (30%).

In the last two quarters Aliyah Roa had the hot scoring hand for the Lady Squires. On 3-of-3 shooting (100%), Roa recorded six of Mountain View’s nine points in the second half. Johnston had the other 3 points, off a field goal and a free throw.

Dominate as a team on the offensive glass, the Squires retrieved 58% of their missed field goal attempts, led by Johnston and starting forward Mainalei Penitusi, each with 5 offensive boards.

Mountain Views stealfest of 42 picks - 36% of their possessions - was spearheaded by starting guard Azalia Retome, with a team-high 7 takeaways.  Roa and Shyanne Dew also joined the mix with 6 steals a piece, as well as Mainalei and Chalize Blackwell, who each added their own 5 pilfers.

“We just keep getting better and better,” Dew stated in the post-game interview. “We have a team bond that can’t be broken., that is too strong for other people.”

That bond will be test this coming Tuesday (Mar. 6) when the north division Woodward Wildcats (6-2) come to town.  The 5:00 p.m. tip-off will give the Lady Squires JV (4-4) the opportunity to gage whether they have become a top-tier team or are still in the rebuilding process.

Tuesday’s (Mar. 6) contest is MV Girls Basketball’s second-to-last game of the 2018 season.
