BREMERTON, Wash. – The WA Girls B team got the action rolling in the first game Friday night (Feb. 16) at Mountain View Middle School for the Warren Ave (WA) Pee Wee Association.
Starters Lucy Taylor and Jailiah Blair were an unstoppable duo for the Knights in the 39-to-7 win over the North Perry Gators. Each girl recorded a double-double, Taylor with 11 points and 23 rebounds, Blair with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Also contributing to Warren Ave’s 15-to-0 first-half sprint out of the gate were point guard Isabelle Garcia-Kurzrock’s 8 points and 9 rebounds, Harmony Green’s 12 rebounds, and Danielle Irving’s 5 rebounds and 9 steals.
By the halftime intermission, the scoreboard read: WA 21, NP 5.
“Tonight was about everybody getting a chance to work and get better,” said Head Coach Bryan Kurzrock. “Sometime when you have games like this it is a good time to work on stuff you don’t get a chance to practice or do in other games.”
One of those elements was a full-court press, something Coach Kurzrock used for the first time this season.
“Believe it or not, it worked out pretty well,” he added. “They (North Perry) don’t have a lot of ball-handlers. Hopefully it works against other teams who can handle the ball.”
Kurzrock’s coaching mantra is – ‘you are only as good as your weakest link.’ He emulates that by “trying to get all the players on the same page.”
Throughout the eighty-eight-minute contest coach was constantly talking to his girls on the floor. Directing this little offensive or that defensive adjustment. Helping them to see parts of the floor they currently weren’t aware of. Picking them up when something they tried to do didn’t work. Cheering loudly with them when they were successful. In essences, Kurzrock was Warren Ave’s sixth player. No wonder they had an advantage, the North Perry girls were playing five-on-six.
To a large part, the Knights offensive success was due to the sheer number of field goal the attempted during the game, seventy-nine overall. That equated to virtually a shot every minute.
The Bremerton High Varsity Girls averaged 40.5 field goals attempts per game this last season, making 19% of their shots. The Mountain View Varsity Girls are currently averaging 41.5 shots per game. on 25% shooting.
In this game, the Warren Ave B Girls shot 23% (18/79). If you take twice as many shots as your opponent, you are going to win basketball games.
With a four and two record and four games remaining in the regular season, the Knights currently reside in the #3 spot, behind North Mason and NK-Suquamish, in the Kitsap Peninsula Pee Wee Girls B standings.
Next up on the schedule for the Knights is a rematch against Chico Girls B, on the road at Central Kitsap Middle School, on Thursday, Feb. 22. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
At home on Jan. 19th, opening night of the season, Warren Ave rolled over Chico 27-to-3.
