BREMERTON, Wash. – Mountain View Middle School hosted the much-anticipated Warren Ave Girls B Knights versus North Mason Girls B game Friday (Mar. 02) night.
A month ago (Wed. - Jan. 24) the two teams faced-off for the first time in Belfair, Wash., at the Old Hawkins gym. In that contest the North Mason girls prevailed, 19-to-16.
Unfortunately for Knights, this Friday night North Mason prevailed again, this time 20-to-19.
The outcome moved North Mason into a first-place tie with NK-Suquamish and the Knights maintained their solid hold on third place.
From the opening tip the game was a chess match between two equal opponents.
Warren Ave took their normal compliment of field goal attempt in the first half, thirty-one. But only one three-pointer by Nevaeh Richards went through the basket. The Knights’ only other point came of a free throw Isabelle Garcia-Kurzrock converted.
Fortunately for Warren Ave, they led 4-to-3 at the halftime break.
“We missed a lot of easy layup,” said coach Bryan Kurzrock.
In the second half the Knights offense came online, in large part due to more aggressive offensive rebounding (58%). But so did North Mason’s offense, who outscore Warren Ave 17-to-15 in the second twenty-two minute period
Throughout the half the lead repeatedly switch hands with neither team able to gain more than a single basket advantage.
Inside of a minute, Richards put the Knights ahead 19-to-18, converting the backside of two free throw shots. It Warren Ave’s final led.
North Mason answered with a field goal, to go up 20-to-19, then held on to the final buzzer.
Danielle Irving, Lucy Taylor, and Jailiah Blair shared the team scoring honors with 4 points each. Taylor also recorded double digit rebounds with 14 boards and Blair led the team with 6 steals.
In the final week of the regular season Warren Ave has three road games in four nights.
Monday (Mar. 5), they travel to take on Chico at Central Kitsap Middle School in Silverdale, Wash.
Wednesday (Mar. 7), the Knights will be at the Suquamish Tribal Fitness & Youth Center, just across the bridge from Bainbridge Island, Wash., to play NK-Suquamish.
Thursday (Mar. 8), Warren Ave returned to Silverdale, Wash., for their third and final game against Chico.
Tip-off for all three games is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
