WA Boys A end their season |
BREMERTON, Wash. – A season for any basketball team is a journey. For some, the journey is tougher.
Such was the case for the Warren Ave (WA) Boys A Knights team, who did not pickup their first win until the sixth game of the 2018 Kitsap Co. Pee Wee Boys Basketball season.
But the journey for the Knights ended well, as they closed out the season with a 32-to-20 win at Mountain View Middle School against the North Mason Bulldogs Thursday evening (Mar. 15).
During the journey they had figured out they need to work together if they wanted to win.
Thursday’s (Mar. 15) game was an abbreviated affair, a single 20-minute period. But that doesn’t matter the way the Knights played.
The game was originally scheduled from earlier in the week but was changed due to a conflicting school activity. North Mason thought the rescheduled game was at 7 p.m., the same time as the original contest. Whereas, it had been rescheduled for 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs didn’t arrive at Mountain View until 6:30. Hence the abbreviated game, being there was a 7 p.m. game also on the calendar.
Like Warren Ave's second win of the season, Monday night (Mar. 12) at Chico Black, it was evident from the tip-off that this WA Boys A team had maturated during the season.
Point guard Dara McClain, the most prolific shooter in the WA Pee Wee club, was finding joy in passing to his teammate and watching them score. He ended the contest with a game-high 4 assists.
Shooting guard Marqkieth Ellison, who has struggles converting his long-range shooting (3-for-34 9%), fueled the Knights offense, hitting 3 of 5 (60%) three pointers.
Forward Dshawn Harvison, who recorded his first triple-double (17 points, 18 rebounds, 11 steals) in the Chico Black win Monday night (Mar. 12), continued to explore is basketball gifts, compiling 8 points and 5 rebounds in the brief 20-minute contest.
And, forward Tanner Halliquist showed once again that he has developed into a legitimate low-post scoring threat, scoring 2 of 3 balls passed into him in the paint.
The other remarkable thing in this contest was that the Knights did not commit a single turnover (i.e. fumbling it out of bounds, passing to an opposing player, having the ball ripped out of their hands on a rebound, or get picked while dribbling) in their twenty-six possessions. On the season, they gave up 111 point on 158 turnovers, 25% of their possessions.
After having the privilege to record WA Boys A team’s final two of three games, both wins, I look forward to seeing them play next season. Hopefully, during the 2018 Mountain View Middle School Boys Basketball season.
Coach Mike Lewis did an excellent, though sometimes frustrating, job of bringing a ragtag group of athletes together and teaching them how to succeed as a team.
