BREMERTON, Wash. – Thursday (Mar. 15) brought Warren Ave (WA) Boys B (5-3) regular season to a close. The 44-to-40 win over visiting Chico Boys B Black (4-5) at Mountain View Middle School proved to be exactly what the Knights needed in for preparation for post-season play.
They started the game slow and trailed 4-to-9 when Coach Ryan Christian called a time-out at the 15:40 mark of the opening half.
They fought back to tie the score at 18 all by halftime.
They played strong in the second half and led 35-to-28 with four minutes remaining in the game.
They faltered down the stretch, allowing Chico to catch-up, but held-on to record the four-point victory.
“I was really proud of the way the boys played,” said Coach Christian.
As is common, Jmiah Smith - 12 points (pts), 15 rebounds (reb), and 4 steals (stl) – Trenton Bulmer – 13 pts, 8 reb, 3 assists (ast), and 2 stl – and Oliver Christian – 4 pts, 8 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl – shouldered the majority of the team’s offensive and defensive load during the contest. Especially Bulmer and Christian, who both hit consecutive free throw shots in the closing minute to starve off Chico’s comeback run.
“They really lit it up tonight,” added coach Christian. “Some kudos to Chico.”
But it was the bench play of guards Jalin Littleraven-Oliver and Eric Guadamuz, as well as forward Chance Enyeart, that produced the four points Chico was not able to make-up.
Substituted in with 8:35 remaining in the game, Enyeart quickly snatched a steal and recorded his only field goal of the game. Two points the Knights would need.
Following at the 4:50 mark, Littleraven-Oliver made his key contribution by converting the first end of two free throws, after being fouled in the act of shooting.
Then, coach Christian inserted Guadamuz for Littleraven-Oliver, with 1:25 to go, and Guadamuz duplicated Littleraven-Oliver’s charity strip feat.
These were the only points this trio of reserves would score in the game but it was what Warren Ave needed to succeed as a team this night.
Having broken up the second-place logjam in the Boys B Standings, between South Kitsap Boys B White, Chico Boys B Black, and Warren Ave with the win, the Knights will advance as the #2 seed into next week’s Kitsap Co. Pee Wee Boys B playoffs.
They will host Chico Boys B White on Monday night (Mar. 19) at Mountain View. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
