UNION HIGH BOYS BASKETBALL (1925-26) Front Row (l to r): Calvin Hooper, ?, ?, Arthur Waaga, ? |
“The Wildcats’ basketball squad, despite the loss of several star performers of the preceding year through graduation, had a fairly successful season. When the final whistle of the year had been blown, the high school hoopsters had won four inter-county games and had lost an equal number.
The squad was exceptionally fast on the floor and very strong on the defensive. The principal weakness was in basket-shooting. Many potential points were lost through poor shots.
Irwin Miller and Larry Kelly were the outstanding players of the squad. Miller, with fifty-nine points to his credit was the leading man on the offense. He was a brilliant passer and a fair shooter. Kelly, one hundred thirty pounds of fighting Irish, was the leading defensive man. His checking was hard at all times, and his eye for the basket netted twenty-eight points for the team. Captain Phil Hudson, flashy and graceful, was an excellent floor general. He stood second, offensively, with fifty-four points. Art Waaga, who worked with Larry as guard, fought his way through everything. He stopped the opposition’s offense time and time. Dick Hull, as forward, did creditable work, and checked in fourteen points. Harold Hughts, although he did not have a chance to break into the line-up very frequently, exhibited class when called upon. He will bear watching next season.
Although the team loses Captain Phil Hudson, Miller, and Hull, the prospects for next year are exceedingly bright. With Kelly, Waaga, and Hughes for a nucleus, Union will have the framework for a strong and powerful team.”
