And then there were three

Update:  Saturday, July 23rd 12:55 am

In Friday night’s MCBL tournament action, the Maryland Orioles gave the Gaithersburg Giants their first 2011 tournament loss by beating them 5-2. In the nightcap, the Columbia Reds survived a 7th inning rally to beat the defending champion Putty Hill Panthers Blue 4-3.

On Saturday, July 23rd, the Columbia Reds will visit the Gaithersburg Giants at 7:15 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium (JCS). The winner of the Reds vs. Giants will visit the Maryland Orioles in the championship game at JCS starting 20 minutes after the end of the first contest.

If the Orioles lose the nightcap, there will be a second championship game on Sunday, July 24th at 7:30 pm at JCS.

We recognize that we are experiencing a heat wave and we want players to remain safe. We believe that by starting games later in the day, that no player will be endangered if they keep hydrated. There were several college lacrosse games played at night recently with no problems encountered.

Everyone should remember that participation in this tournament is voluntary, not mandatory. Any player or parent of player who is concerned about playing in this weekend's weather should refrain from playing.

Any player who chooses to play is doing so of their own free will and with full recognition of the risks associated with playing baseball in these weather conditions.

If anyone has a large fan they should bring them as there are electrical outlets near the dugouts of JCS where the fans could be plugged in. All spectator seating at JCS is under cover.

Having said that, we look forward to an exciting conclusion of the 2011 MCBL Postseason Tournament.
