Lightning/Thunder Policy

Since safety if one of our paramount concerns, and given the rash of recent inclement weather and strong storms, we wanted to remind all coaches, players and fans of MCBL policy with respect to lightning and thunder.

Policy

MCBL follows NCAA rules.

Under NCAA rules, no game may start or restart until 30 minutes have passed since any thunder has been heard and/or any lightning has been seen.

If thunder is heard and/or lightning is seen in the middle of a game, the umpires will stop play (for a minimum of 30 minutes).

It is the responsiblity of team managers/head coaches to immediately vacate the field and have the players move to a safe location.  If a building is not available, then everyone should relocate to a vehicle with a metal roof (e.g., not a convertible nor golf cart).

Tips when relocating

If inside a building, avoid using a landline telephone.  Also avoid the showers, plumbing facilities, contact with electrical applicances, open windows and doorways during a thunderstorm.

If inside a vehicle, roll up the windows and avoid touching the metal framework of the vehicle (e.g., metal steering wheel).

At all costs, avoid standing under trees, metal objects (including benches, bleachers, backstops, fences).  Avoid standing water and open fields and/or high ground.

If you feel you hair stand on end and skin tingle, immediately assume a crouched position by dropping to your knees, placing your hand/arms on your legs and lowering your head.  Do not lie flat.

Final thoughts

It should be noted that while thunder may be heard up to 8 miles, lightning can strike up to 10 miles.....often ahead of an approaching storm and even when blue skies are overhead and it is not raining.

Therefore, if you hear thunder and/or see lightning you are in immediate danger.  Remember the old adage......when thunder roars, go indoors.

As a player, fan or coach, if you hear thunder and/or see lightning please immediately inform the umpire so that the game can be stopped and everyone can vacate the field to seek shelter.

Let's work together to keep everyone safe.

Thanks.
