Standings Explained
Some fans and followers of MCBL baseball may wonder why the standings aren't ranked in the traditional order of "win percentage".
As of July 12th, for example, the BCC Big Train Stars have a higher win percentage (.550) than either the Rockville Express (.545) or the Koa Sports Green Wave (.524). Yet, BCC is ranked below both Rockville and Koa.
That's because the league members have chosen to rank teams in the standings based upon the number of wins.
Why the change?
Well, all summer leagues are subject to the whims of mother nature. While we want and need the rain for our everyday living, it does sometimes wreck havoc with our ability to play games.
Rescheduling any rained out games becomes challenging for teams to find a remaining common open date, find a suitable field and still have sufficient leadtime to obtain umpires.
The league didn't want any teams who jump out to a hot start (e.g., great winning percentage) early in the season to become a bit reluctant to reschedule any rained out games to preserve their win percentage in the standings.
By only counting "wins" teams are, in effect, encouraged to reschedule and play as many of their rained out games as possible.
Not that they need much encouragement. All the MCBL coaches have done a fantastic job this year of dealing with mother nature.
Fans should not overlook of the tremendous efforts done behind the scenes by the coaches to meet the many challenges of rescheduling rained out games.
Its simply another testament to the efforts that all coaches make to allow their players to hone their skills and play as much baseball as possible in a tight 6 week season.
