Love it or Leave it

June 17, 2025

In the first game of a double header last Saturday, the Monarchs and the Dusters combined for 19 hits and 14 runs with the Monarchs prevailing.   In the second game the Dusters prevailed with the two teams combining for 5 hits and only one run…….for our first 1-0 game of the season.

Which got us to thinking………how often do we see a

1-0 game in MCBL?  How often would you guess it occurs…….1 % of the time?  3 % of the time? 5 % of the time?

We were also curious…..how often do we see a 2-0 game?  And which do you think occurs more often?

We looked back at all games from the 2014 season thru last year……a total of 1,426 regular season games.  The results:

                       1-0          2-0

     2014            6             5

     2015            3             4

     2016            1             0

     2017            0             0

     2018            0             0

     2019            2             0

     2020            2             1

     2021            1             0

     2022            0             1

     2023            3             0

     2024            1             1

     Total           19           12

Thus…….1.33 % of all games end 1-0……and 0.84 % of all games end 2-0.

It's somewhat interesting that since 2015, only 3 games have ended 2-0.  That's 3 out of 1,124 games.....or less than 3/10 of one percent.

Even 1-0 games were scarce from 2016 thru 2018...only 1 game out of 435 games....also less than 3/10 of one percent.

With 8 teams in the league, how many teams do you think have previously won a 1-0 game?  Or lost a 1-0 game?

Answer:   All 8 current teams have won a 1-0 game and all 8 teams have lost a 1-0 game.

It should be noted...that there has been one and only one 1-0 game in the postseason: the finals of the 2023 MCBL Tournament.   In these finals, the Rockville Express pitchers only allowed one walk and one extra base hit to the Baltimore Chop.   However, that extra base hit was the first home run of the year by Andrew Kell which propelled the Chop to a 1-0 victory in the championship game.

Some fans love these pitcher’s duels.  Some fans would rather see more scoring.

No matter what you like…..the MCBL boys of summer do not disappoint.

See ya at the ballfield!
